The City of Matlosana Local Municipality includes the towns of Klerksdorp, Orkney, Kanana, Stilfontein, Khuma, Tigane, Hartbeesfontein, and their surrounding areas. We serve a population of approximately 398,676 residents (2022 estimate) across a diverse urban and rural landscape.

The City of Matlosana has a rich and diverse history, evolving from its mining roots to become an important economic center in North West Province.
Gold was discovered on the farm Rooikoppen, which led to the development of Klerksdorp as a mining town. This marked the beginning of significant settlement and economic activity in the area.
The discovery of new gold reefs in the Western Transvaal led to further expansion of mining activities and the establishment of additional settlements around Klerksdorp.
Significant urban development took place with the establishment of townships including Jouberton, Kanana, and Khuma to accommodate the growing workforce in the mining industry.
Following the end of apartheid, local government structures were reorganized, creating the foundation for the current municipal boundaries and governance systems.
The City of Matlosana Local Municipality was established as part of the local government transformation, amalgamating several previously separate local authorities including Klerksdorp, Orkney, Stilfontein, and Hartbeesfontein.
